TOPIC: Couple of questions
Couple of questions 2 years, 1 month ago #3777
Hello.
As topic name says, I have some questions about this game (seems almost completely forgotten by the world btw). First, is there a difference between "speed" and "movement"? I saw stuff with bonus to either of them. Second, how does the game decide who acts first in the first combat round? Subjectively, it looks like AI units get to attack first more often than my own but maybe it's just random? Also, I can't start the first mission of the additional campaign (Amthor's Revenge). It always get stuck at loading screen (1%). Can anyone help with that? Oh, and almost forgot - more than once I've heard recommendations against using 1.05B. Apparently, there are some vague problems with it and 1.05A is the last stable version. Yet, I finished the original campaign on 1.05B without any trouble. It would be nice to have some clarification on that. Thanks in advance. |

1) There is a difference between Speed and Movement. Movement is what each side gets each turn to move. Speed is cumulative bonus movement to an entire stack. For example, if you play the Dark Elves side, your race movement is 20 so all units get 20 movement per turn. If you build a Spider unit with the 'Speed' skill it will give you 1 extra movement per turn for each Spider unit in your stack (so a stack that contains 1 spider gives that stack a movement of 21 and a stack that contains 8 spiders gives that stack a movement of 28).
2) The side with the higher Morale always goes first in combat. I've forgotten at the moment who goes first (attacker/defender) when Morale is equal. Also, the side with the higher Morale has a chance for an extra attack each round. The chance is 3% per point of difference (so if your Morale is 7 and the enemy Morale is 4 you have a 7-4=3x3=9% chance for an extra attack each round. 3) Not sure why you can't start the campaign. Did you put the Amthor warlord (Amthor.war file) in your Warlords directory? It may well be that the Campaign is looking for a specific Warlord name and won't work without it. If you don't want to use the Warlord that comes with the Campaign you should be able to delete the Amthor warlord and create your own named Amthor from scratch with the skills you want. That would be the most likely guess as to why it's not working (note there are some EVT - events that need to be in the English directory too assuming you installed the English version). 4) I've never heard that from anyone. Where did you read that? 1.05B just contained fixes for issues in 1.05A so there is no reason for it to be less stable. KGB |

1) Got it.
2) I knew about extra attack but not about morale effect on who attacks first, so thanks again. 3) The problem was with with the "English" directory being, well, not english as I play another version. Simple renaming fixed the problem. 4) GOG forums for warlords series come to mind but I'm pretty sure I saw it in other places too. Like I said, I had no problems with the patch. Btw, Amthor campaign kinda feel like it's a sequel/spinoff of some other story. It have rather abrupt start, casually mention things I have no idea about (like Elementars or Amthor having some Dwarven blood yet being hated by them) and the like. I never played any earlier Warlords games - is this why it feels this way? Thanks. |

I'm glad you got the Campaign to work. I forget sometimes that not everyone installs an English version of the game. Unfortunately most people who make add on stuff do it in English only because they are not aware there are other places they need to put files.
Amthor is the sequel to the Son Of Uthnag campaign. It's available in the Warlords IV download section. I have them listed alphabetically so maybe that's why you grabbed Amthor first. If you read the description page for the 2 campaigns you'll note the Son of Uthnag was done in 2006 and Amthor in 2008. KGB |

Amthor campaign was added with one of patches. I didn't download it separately.
I must say, the whole idea of officially patched-in campaign being a sequel to some downlodable one instead of the game's original is rather strange. |

I can understand why it seems strange but there is a story behind it
The author of the Campaigns made part 1 when I was doing the first patch. I didn't even know he had created a campaign because it wasn't widely available for download at that time. When I started the 1.05 patch, he wrote to me here and asked for some fixes to the events (EVT files) along with the creation of some new events he wanted for a campaign he was doing. So I did what he asked including adding a new Warlord Portrait etc. Since I did all that work for him, I figured I might as well add the Campaign itself into the 1.05 patch so everyone would get it without needing to come here for it. But I had no idea it was a sequel so I didn't know I should have included the original too. KGB |

So, you are/were one of the game's developers? Or was it what is now called community patches with you representing community?
Are these campaigns considered canonical? Or they are basically fanfiction? I hope my question spam do not annoy you too much Your crown is pretty nice btw. There is always someone with it in my retinue. |

Community patch with me doing the code development and getting ideas from lots of players who I was playing online multi-player with at that time. I got the source code through an NDA with the games developer who I got to know personally over the years from earlier Warlords games.
The campaigns are fan fiction from the guy who made them. There were a few campaigns from the prior game (Warlords 3 - DLR) that would have been great to port to Warlords IV but no one ever took on the effort of doing it. Yes, my Crown was one of the first new items I added. I'd LONG wanted an item with that capability (back from the prior game Warlords 3) so I decided to dedicate it to myself It's nerfed in 1.05 because in 1.03 you could have multiple Crowns and they would stack but getting +6 mana Regeneration from your Retinue was too good so I adjusted it in 1.05 so only 1 counts no matter how many you have. There are quite a few other nice items named after players who helped with ideas and play testing. Obviously you are using a Spell Casting Warlord if you use my Crown KGB |

Yeah, I'm pretty much always play spellcasters in fantasy RPGs or strategy games. Your crown was quite handy in both Aravein and Amthor campaigns. Still miss one in the dwarven campaign through. Not for long, hopefully, as any sustained spell kills my mana regen
Through THE most OP artefact is Ring of Trolls IMO. A mid-level hero with it becomes literal one-man army. Can you tell me about "Magical Immunity"? Does it work against magic-like unit skills (like Curse) or only against global map spells like Ring of Fire? |

Lucky for you, one of the Quests has my Crown as one of the rewards so it won't take long to get one.
One of the problems with mana regen is that low level Warlords don't generate much mana so you can hardly use any spells unless you luck into crystals in a ruin or mage tower sites. So I've always preferred playing with higher level Warlords (L25+) so that you have a decent amount of mana regen (4 or more) without needing crystals or mage towers. It's also where the differences between the spell casters and the combat warlords other powers make for much more interesting games. The Ring of Trolls - LOL. Never heard anyone call that an OP item before. Really never seen anyone use it and I've played a lot of multi-player games where players picked their items for their retinue. You are far better off with a Vampirism hero / item or even a straight healing hero / item and use that slot for something far more useful. If you like Regeneration so much why not a Demonic hero with +5 Regeneration? Magic Immunity (the lesser one you get on items/hero skill and the stronger one you get from the Necromancer Warlord) only works against spells. If you want a defense against Bless and Curse you need Negate (which is why the AI Uber Retinue heroes use that). KGB |
