TOPIC: W4 difficulty levels
W4 difficulty levels 6 years, 5 months ago #3481
Where can I find (if anywhere at all) the complete descriptions of differencies in difficulty levels in Warlords 4?

Vissavald,
There isn't a complete list anywhere. For the most part the AI calculates the 'best' decision for everything (choosing targets to attack, building units, spending gold, which army to select in tactical combat, casting & researching spells, whether to raze/rebuild etc). Then at the highest level the AI always executes that move. For lesser levels of difficulty there is a % chance the AI instead makes a random decision. I believe at King (2nd highest level) it's 10% at 3rd highest it's 20% and lowest it's 30% (so at lowest level the AI makes a random choice on 30% of it's decisions). I can check those % if you want. I can't recall if the AI got anything special beyond that without looking at the code (which I can do if it it's important) although I *think* it uses more armies on defense of cities at higher levels (again need to check). Thanks, interesting facts about AI. Yes, if you please and if it wouldn't bother you much, some exact numbers would be very helpful, 'cause I'm trying to write some kind of strategy guide for Warlords 4 in Russian (as well as for Warlords 3 DLR too, 'cause the one and only ever existed Russian digital guide by Granite Golem seems to have been kept now only by me, after the shutdown of Mod3M's Darklord's Lair site, and I plan to expand and update it).
As for me, I just noticed that at Knight level there's no Hidden Map option, on Prince and King (I haven't played Emperor yet) map is hidden but I can't realize is there Fog of War? (there is no such separate option in settings). Plus, I'm curious, does AI get any "unfair" bonuses with difficulty levels increasing, such as higher-levelled starting heroes and troops, larger gold and mana starting reserves and so on (I can't find out any info on this subject, neither in manual, nor in WizIce documentation, nor here). Thanks in advance. |

Vissavald,
AI Bonus's per level (lowest to highest): Hero Offer: 0/5/10/15% Hero Cost: 100/95/90/85% Hero Level: Min 6th Ally Offer: 0/5/10/15% Ally Cost: 100/95/90/85% Ally Level: 0/1/2/3 (+level) Item Offer: 0/5/10/15% Item Cost: 100/95/90/85% City Fortify Cost: 100/95/90/85% Site Upgrade Cost: 100/95/90/85% AI Combat/Ruin XP: 0/10/20/25% AI Ruin Gold: 0/10/20/25% AI Income: 0/5/10/20% These might be bit too high now after the AI upgrades I made but on the other hand the challenge level is higher AI Logic (lowest to highest): City Production Best Choice: 40/60/80/100% Next Combat Unit Selection Choice: 70/80/90/100% Warlord Creation Point Choice: 20/33/50/75% Turns Between City Upgrade: 4/3/2/1 (assumes gold to do so) Turns Between Site Upgrade: 4/3/2/1 (assumes gold to do so) City Defense Strength: 40/60/80/100% Level Up Unit Choice: 40/60/80/100% City Capture Choices: 40/60/80/100% Spell Research Choice: 70/80/90/100% Normal Stack Do Nothing Chance: 20/10/5/0% A Grade Stack Do Nothing Chance: 20/10/0/0% Stack Size Replenish: 3/5/7/8 There are quite a few other options but belong to the inner workings of the AI target picking / spell casting so not easily explained here. Even many of the above may not mean much. I've never really played much on lower AI levels so I had no idea that hidden map or FOW wasn't available on every level. KGB |

Wooh, thanks a lot for introducing a bit into the dark depths of AI warlords mind.
This can be useful for my would-be W4 Strategy Guide. |

I have another question about W4 AI, if you don't mind.
Does AI raze cities (as it did in W3DLR), and does AI ever raze 'em permanently (cities of races opposing the AI's race on "race wheel")? Does it raze only on capture or it may do it later (Raze Anytime option)? Are there some algorithms AI uses in making razing decision (safe the distance on "race wheel")? |

Answers:
1) The AI does raze cities. 2) It never permanently razes them. 3) The AI does a raze/rebuilt if the city is too far away on the race wheel (this is part of the city capture choices logic I mentioned in the prior email). KGB |
