Newbie questions about Warlords series 10 years, 6 months ago #1217
Hi to all.
I'm new in Warlords world. I was searching for good fantasy TBS and I'm here. I don't like all these modern super-mega-graphic-enhanced games with shallow gameplay. So I'm fond of all the good old games like Age of Wonders 1 & 2, Master of Magic, Heroes series a little. I have all Battlecry series on GOG but I like TBS more. So, my newb questions are: 1) Can I purchase the legal digital copies of Warlords 3 DLR and Warlords IV somewhere (I guess that I don't but nevertheless...) 2) I searched the Infinite Interactive forums but no signs of Steve Fawkner's working on som new title in series (TBS or RTS). Maybe getting the classic titles Warlords 3 & 4 on GOG or somewhere else could be helpful for him and his company. It must be Ubisoft that owns the rights for these two games now, am I right? 3) Is there some sense to me to install the unit packs (Warlords 3) if I play only single? Can "vanilla" campaigns use custom-made units? 4) Are there some plans to patch Warlords IV further than today's 1.05? Thanks in advance. And thank you all to keep such a good old games alive. |

1) Warlords IV copies are available on eBay. I've seen some DLR ones there too. I also recall seeing Warlords IV copies still available from some online retailers. So if you google around you can find legitimate sellers.
2) Steve owns the rights to DLR. The problem is the source code for the last version (1.02) was lost so there is no possibility of getting that ported. War4 wasn't popular enough to port anywhere (I do have permission to make it available on XBox live if I wanted to do the port and go through the hassle of it but I don't). If anything it would be War2 that got ported to other platforms (there was a DS version being done at one time and WarI has already been ported to the iPhone). 3) Actually the answer is the packs are useful if you want to build your own custom army sets for yourself and the AI sides. They are not useful for campaigns which use fixed army sets for all sides. 4) Not officially. I fixed some bugs and added a few features in the 1.05A and 1.05B versions which you might want to grab if you haven't already. Adding a few simple feature in a 1.05C version is possible if there is some demand for it. Anything specific you were looking for? KGB |

Thanks for your reply.
As for the patch, I can't say that I'm ready now to give some suggestions for content of possible patches just because I played too little for now to say something useful... I just remember when I owned the localised russian Warlords IV CD long ago (in times it was released I think), I wasn't much impressed with gameplay, although I was quite enchanted with graphics and especially music. With patches now the game is really reborn, though I still feel something is lacking but I can't say what exactly... I like much the idea of upgrading the sites. Maybe some city upgrades or builder units to build some on map (entrenchments, fortresses, sites on pre-designated areas), I don't know... The world still seems rather empty. I know that Warlords series was always more oriented on war and battles but still... Maybe we need the next installment to make our dreams come true. |
