It woukd be great fun to play some ganes with you as well. Heathens tends to use Steam as Balthus Dire. Lord Suspect and I still talk, great friends, but mostly boardgames or hikes.
My kids and I are trying to do DLR hotseat, but having no luck. I am getting PCX load errors for hero files. My Win2k VM allowed the install to finish, but the display is only 16-bit and a Direct Draw error occurs. I will seek out the Batz VM. On Win7, I copied the files from my VM and followed the recemmrnded steps above after failing with a download from isozone. Getting to game setup and the edit army screen nearly had me weeping with joy. The hero error may be a side effect of my DVD drive slowing way down at that step in the install. Smells like a bad driver...or I need a better Win OS. Might have XP or Win 98 laying around while I wait for Batz. Playing DLR again online sounds really fun. |

Seren,
Thanks for the tip on Heathens. I'll have to look for him there or try and get in touch with him via email. Not sure why you are getting PCX load errors. It sounds like the install didn't work correctly. The display actually is only 16 bit (it's a 1997 game after all). Did you remember to use the -wincursor option? It may also be a wide screen issue as DLR is meant for 4:3 mode I can't remember if the K4 hero files contain the PCX stuff or not. It might be worth checking to see if it has files you are missing. In any case, Batz's VM is probably the best solution. Looking forward to playing a game or 2 of DLR online once you get it working again. KGB P.S. I think it's fantastic you are introducing your kids to the game. You are breeding a whole new generation of fans! |

Batz was a life saver. VM operational without a hitch. I also found a YouTube playlist with the soundtrack, so I can have the full experience of 1998.
![]() I was able to copy the HEROES directory from the VM to my Win7 version and now I am able to play without the image following the directions above. So clearly, it was something with the CD. Not trying to hijack the thread, but felt the extra details might help someone in the future. Hi future! |

I'm sorry, I am not the best with computers, but I like to think I know enough. When you say copy W3 directory......there is no folder named W3 on the warlords 3: Dark Lords Rising. Are you saying copy the everything inside the Red Orb folder? So I am copying all files as is from 32bit pc installation?

If you mean from the CD, the answer is no.
If you mean all the files from an actual installation then the answer is yes. Usually the folder is named something like Warlord3 (Inside that folder are lots of subfolders with names like Advisor, Army, Campaign, City plus the warlords executable file and some other needed files). That's why it says copy the entire folder. KGB |

You should be able to send Batz a PM using this forum on this site to request the VM.
Try using KGB's batch file located in this thread. Put it in the same directory as your executable and edit it for the appropriate path. Create a shortcut to that .bat file and run that and you can save yourself some pain. That .bat file will automagically set all the things I describe below. The wincursor option is where you create a shortcut to the DLR executable. Then right-click on that guy and go to Properties. Make sure the Target field looks like this: "YourInstallPath\Darklord.exe" -wincursor That should do it. I think there is additional advice on this site for compatibility settings. Here are mine:

I thought this may be helpful to those that do not have a 32 bit computer used so that the files can be transferred to the 64 bit machine or for those that do not want a VM set up. Take a look..perhaps it is useful?
