TOPIC: email game crash
email game crash 10 years, 8 months ago #1319
Hi all! I've re-discovered this game I've played long ago and found out that it's awesome. So I tried to play it with a live opponent, which is of course much better than single-player.
Well, one game was successfully set up and finished, and with the next one with the different opponent there suddenly appeared to be problems ![]() The subject is: I set up a game with my and op's PGS (they are both containing SH/k4 units). Parameters are - see in cities on, fog of war off (so, playing it all open), armies 1 per city, and Choose capitols. I place them pretty balanced and send the turn to my opp (he moves 1st). He successfully loads it and makes his move. Then I receive his turn AND IT FAILS TO LOAD, crashing me out of the game. My system is win7. But in no other case the save/email failed to load ALL the time. Just sometimes I had to restart warlords. There, it doesn't work. Does anyone have similar case in mind, or know/suggest what that could be? It's kind of depressing to have thought craploads of ideas about strategy/setting up a pgs and then be unable to play due to some tech issues. ![]() |

Quasar,
I am assuming you have the -wincuror option turned on when you are playing? If not, that would be a prime reason it would crash. If you do, you might try enabling compatibility mode (Win 98) and see if that fixes it. But it sounds to me like there is just a corrupted save game. That's been known to happen on occasion. Since it's turn 1, can your opponent just re-do his turn and send it to you again and see if that loads. KGB |

Yes, the -wincursor is there.
We've tried to re-do turns and re-create games a ton of times... and still the same result. And how do I enable the compatibility with win98? if it IS indeed corrupted, is there any way to possibly predict/prevent the file from being corrupted ![]() |

Quasar,
Right click on the DLR icon and select Properties->Compatibility. I know someone who had a similar problem. It was games coming from XP wouldn't load on his Win 7 machine. I think this is what fixed it. If it doesn't, you'll have to abandon playing with that player *or* get the virtual machine that runs DLR. KGB |

well... it didn't.
but maybe i should CREATE this game already with compatibility on (this time, it clearly wasn't the case)... and further on the subject, what goal should i achieve by playing it with virt machine? I must have the same system on it that is on my opponent's computer or what? |

Quasar,
You can try creating it that way. But I doubt it matters. When you created it, could you load it before you sent it to the other player (ie, if he moved 1st on turn 1, can you load his turn and does that work. If it does, it means there is an issue between his and your machine). The purpose of the virtual machine is to allow you to play when you have a problem using Win 7. Some players absolutely can't play in Win 7 and some can. No one knows exactly why. I suspect it has to do with wide screen vs normal screen. The game is old and was designed for normal screen. I suspect when you have a wide screen and the game tries to change it to normal screen that it can cause it to crash. If you get the virtual machine (available at the Last Citadel link) then you don't have to worry about Win 7 issues causing crashes. You don't have to have the same system as your opponent. KGB |

yes, I could load his turn myself.
but when MY turn came from him - then I couldn't. but one strange detail - when we set a game with custom sets containing no sh/k4 units - I actually could load turns coming from him. |

well, I meant that if there's compatibility issue because of which games from HIS system don't load in MINE, then there has to be same system on both comps... or... what could possibly solve this problem i'm lost in guesses. o.o
P.S.: sorry. What link you were talking about on last citadel? I mean a link concerning the virtual machine |

This makes me wonder if he doesn't have the right K4/SH units installed on his machine. There were some older versions of the SH units available on other sites etc. If he had the wrong ones it could lead to problems. The Last Citadel has the virtual machine that already has DLR loaded on it. So if you were going to try that it would be the place to get it. KGB |

no, he used the same distributive as I - it was taken from Last Citadel.
An experienced warlord told me that there might be problem with file system - warlords dlr should be installed on a disk with FAT system instead of NTFS. An indirect confirmation of possibility of this problem is strange scenario descriptions in cases they DID load. One game had the mismatching one to an actual map (i.e. map was obviously small, and descr said it was 128x160), another one's description was lacking the parameters like islands/forest/etc and Author (the computer, lol) although it obviously was a Random map. So the file might be "damaged" by wrong file system, cutting off some part of it and attaching it somewhere else (i'm not a profi in file systems though) |
