TOPIC: how to make game run while tabbed?
how to make game run while tabbed? 13 years, 11 months ago #119
Is there a way to make the game continue while you have alt-tabbed to windows? The turns take quite long when I play vs 7comps. I'm not interested in staring at the screen while they do their turns... I tried to do a -windowed command in the shortcut to the game, but that didn't seem to have any effect.

Aznagroth,
Don't use alt-tab. Use the window key instead as it will allow the AI's to continue while the game is minimized. KGB |

Sorry for not being more precise in my wording. By alt-tabbing I mean: alt-tab, winkey and winkey+d. The in-game hotkey for minimizing (ctrl-x) does only work on my turn. I have just tested this and there seem to be no progress at all while the game is minimized (no matter how it was minimized). If only the windowed-command would work....

Aznagroth,
I understood what you meant. Alt-Tab doesn't progress the game as the game 'catches' that key stroke. It also does not run windowed as you discovered. However on my XP machine if I press the windows key (says START on my keyboard and has a microsoft logo on it), the game minimizes. While it's minimized the AI's continue to run. That's because Warlords was written before this key was added to keyboards and so can't 'catch' it and stop the AI from progressing. KGB |

I'm using a logitech classic keyboard (y-sm48) bought in Norway so I guess the layout is either english or norwegian. It doesn not say "start" on my winkey. It only shows the windwos icon in black and white. Pressing that button brings me to windows with my startmenu open. When I go back to the game the status is just the same as when I left it. Thanks for your help anyway

Must be the Norwegian version of windows that causes this not to work
![]() My keyboard is a Logitech too and I get the exact same effect. Except DLR continues to run when minimized. It's the only way I've found where it does. Hence my joke about your version of Windows not supporting running games in the background when minimized. Guess you are out of luck and will have to sit through the AI turns. KGB |

I guess you might be correct about the windowsversion. I'm using xp home. I take it you are a person that would use the professional version.
Well, well, I'm back to trying to beat 7 computers that call back their armies every time the city they sendt the armies to gets captured by another. I should really bug my friends about this and get a real game going. |

Aznagroth,
I'm using XP Pro 64. Since I last wrote, I rebooted my machine. Now the Windows key isn't working for me either as the game is freezing till I get back. So *something* I did allowed the Windows key to work. I was fiddling around with all the options we've talked about, -w, Alt-Tab, CTRL-ESC when I found the Windows key working the other day. Now it's not. Probably I ended up setting something that got unset during reboot. So it's not quite as obvious as the windows key though that was the final step. KGB |
