TOPIC: Interesting tibit about Warlords 1 and Steve
Re: Interesting tibit about Warlords 1 and Steve 7 years, 2 months ago #1898
About 38,500 people sign up every day, so it seems like Kate Upton's tits make a good argument for the game. This is the dark future of gaming. Casual games are the most popular genre and pull in billions of dollars. They're purposely designed to be addictive, but they're not designed to be fun -- if they were, why would you spend money to improve the experience?
That's the most sad statement. Especially considering that it is true. |

I didn't realize the GoW numbers were so low. I thought there would have been a lot more players. Actually, there probably are. Thinking about it, I probably mis-used "Steam metrics". What I was going by was that every week, there's something called a "PvP ladder" where you start at Rank 15 and gain points fighting other players teams and get to Rank 1. Since you get rewards for attaining ranks, it's usually wise to do it. So on Sunday before the reset, I usually see my standings among other players at Rank 1 at something like 30K, meaning my point total for that week is at number 30K-ish among all players. But it *doesn't* show the total number of players (like 30K out of X), so the number of players who have less than my points is unknown. It could 1000, it could 50,000. I also don't know the total number of downloads on mobile or installs from Steam. And again, I have no idea of the console numbers, active or total downloads/installs. Although I do doubt the total number of *active* players is a million for all platforms. That would be great but I just don't get that feeling |

I knew this back in 1998. How much do you think Steve is going to want to do another game at that age or how much will the old Warlords fans even want one then? People who are in their late 50's rarely do a labor of love game Hey! For example, Roger Keating is making a new wargame with SSG (actually with Gregor Whiley, because currently there is no one else in SSG) for Matrix Games. And he said two years ago that they have ideas for three more games. Here what he also said: "The one thing about being a game designer is the need to keep making the damn things. We still have a board game that is finished and one of these days I would love to release it. It is a delightful family game based on Warlords. " |

I've seen pictures of that boardgame. Steve had some that he showed me. It looked pretty interesting as it was along an Axis&Allies type game.
The question is whether those guys are going to actually complete anything and whether it will sell. Roger must be in his late 50's by now or older as I remember SSG games like Carriers at War from the C64 days in the early 80's. More and more it seems to me that mobile is where casual / semi serious games (Game of War type thing) are going and the PC will be limited to VR or MMO / FPS games that require a ton of graphics / CPU horsepower. He started making games in late 70's when he was a high school math teacher. Strategy games are not going anywhere. I mostly play Paradox games now (Europa Universalis 4, Crusader Kings 2). And Paradox is doing pretty good. And crowdfunded RPGs like Pillars of Eternity and Divinity TOS are very popular. PC gaming is still very much alive and diverse (thanks to indie developers). |

BTW, Slitherine/Matrix could be the right publishers for hypothetical future Warlords V.
